AUSTIN, Texas — Feb. 2, 2026, 8:59 PM EST — Tesla has quietly released a new Model Y All-Wheel Drive (AWD) variant in the U.S. market at $41,990, while simultaneously dropping its long-standing “Standard” naming convention across the lineup.

Pricing Overhaul

The electric vehicle maker’s updated Model Y lineup now features simplified drive-train designations:

  • Rear-Wheel Drive: $39,990
  • All-Wheel Drive: $41,990
  • Premium Rear-Wheel Drive: $44,990

The new AWD variant fills a $2,000 pricing gap between the base RWD model and the premium variant, offering dual-motor capability at a more accessible price point than previous AWD offerings.

Naming Convention Shift

Tesla’s decision to eliminate “Standard” from its product names represents a strategic simplification of its marketing approach. The automaker previously used “Standard Range” and “Long Range” designations to differentiate battery configurations.

The streamlined nomenclature — simply “RWD” and “AWD” — mirrors Tesla’s ongoing efforts to reduce complexity in its product lineup, a strategy CEO Elon Musk has emphasized in recent earnings calls.

Market Context

The Model Y remains Tesla’s best-selling vehicle globally and was the world’s top-selling car in 2023. The new pricing structure positions Tesla more competitively against emerging rivals including:

  • Ford Mustang Mach-E (starting at $39,995)
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5 (starting at $41,450)
  • Volkswagen ID.4 (starting at $38,995)

The $41,990 AWD variant arrives as federal EV tax credit eligibility continues to shift under updated Treasury Department guidance, potentially affecting final consumer pricing in select markets.

Availability

The new Model Y AWD is available for order now on Tesla’s website with estimated delivery windows varying by region. Tesla has not announced whether the pricing or naming changes will extend to international markets.
